The Giver Book Report

Title: The Giver

Author: Lois Lowry

Genre: Speculative Fiction

Jonas, an ordinary kid in a not so ordinary world, is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memories.  The community Jonas lives in has gotten rid of all feelings and differences to make a perfect world.  This way everyone has become in essence, the same.  It all starts one day when Jonas sees an apple ‘change’ somehow and he has never seen anything like it.  He simply can’t describe it. In the end Jonas learns what true happiness and pain are and he learns an important lesson about choices.

In the giver, the author wants you to think about what you would be willing to give up for a perfect world.  I think the author displays an important point in the message of The Giver.  In reality you must ask yourself what you would give up to live in a perfect world.  Jonas’s community gave up virtually everything.  I personally would be willing to give up everything and live in that world.  There are no anger, no stress, and no pain.  However, you would also have to give up happiness and joy, which would be difficult.  Do you think it’s worth it?

Overall, I liked the story The Giver. It was definitely a book that made you think, and in my opinion that is the best type of book.  I like the ending because it was happy and was realistic.  The author did a beautiful job of describing most of the book, but I think she rushed the ending.  There could have been a ton of detail in that part but in stead it skipped days at a time.  For a rating, I would give The Giver five stars because it was one of my favorite books.  It deserves that rating because it is a compelling story that keeps you guessing and flows the entire way.  Almost every part was interesting and gripping.  An easy read, I would recommend this book to 5th through 7th graders.
